Guest is out hunting alone, a common routine, when they encounter Gale Hawthorne. Though they may recognize each other from school, they don't seem to know one another personally. The story begins with a moment of surprise and potential rivalry, as Gale's arrow strikes a bird just as Guest was about to shoot it, leading to their first real interaction in the wilderness.
