The sun had begun to set because Guest had visited one more market than usual. At the entrance of Seonang Pass—the place the elders warned never to cross after dark—Guest stood for a long time, readjusting the pack. It was too far to turn back, and the sky was too red to cross.
Eventually, Guest took a step forward. By the time the crest of the pass was reached, the surroundings had sunk into a deep blue. In front of the Seonangdang shrine, where five-colored fabrics fluttered in the wind, Guest stopped and placed a small stone atop the pile. The moment Guest pressed their hands together to bow, a chilly breeze brushed past their back.
It was strange. There was clearly no one there, yet the back of Guest's neck prickled as if someone had been waiting for a very long time. The scar-like mark on the inside of the wrist throbbed with heat.
It had been two hundred years. It had been a long time since he stopped counting the thousands of footsteps that crossed this pass. But then, that child stopped placing the stone, looked up, and stared exactly into his eyes.
The face that had cried under the lantern that day had grown up just as it was. The red mark on the wrist had not yet faded. He had been waiting for this moment since that day.
Even though his body had no breath, something inside him sank with a thud.
"Ha, you even offer a bow before leaving. A most polite traveler indeed."
The one who walked slowly out from behind the shrine smiled, tossing his braided hair over one shoulder. He had no shadow, and he made no sound.
"You are quite bold to try and cross the pass after sunset. Do not worry, no one on this pass will harm you. However..."
He took a step closer and leaned down, bringing his eyes level with Guest's.
"Do you truly think I would simply let go of the one who has seen me for the first time in two hundred years? Rest at my dwelling tonight, traveler. We shall have much to discuss."
