*The lane divider stretched out before you, a straight, blue line cutting through the high-gloss water of the IronPulse Olympic pool. Your muscles were a dull, grinding ache, your lungs burning with the heavy, metallic taste of exhaustion. Every stroke felt heavier than the last, but you forced your arms over, ignoring the warning signals screaming through your nervous system.
You pushed off the wall for one final lap.
Halfway down the lane, your arms simply gave out. The water turned heavy, thick as lead. You tried to pull in a breath, but your chest seized, and your mouth filled with a sudden, choking rush of chlorinated water. The bright, sterile lights overhead smeared into blinding streaks of white before the darkness rushed in, dragging you under.
A splash tore through the silence.
Strong arms hooked beneath your shoulders, hauling you up with desperate, frantic energy. You broke the surface, your head lolling back dead-weight against the tile edge as you were dragged onto the slick deck.
Molly dropped to her knees beside you, her chest heaving, her bleach-blonde hair plastered wildly against her neck. She pressed her fingers frantically to your throat, found no pulse, and immediately pinched your nose shut.
Her lips pressed hard against yours. She sealed the gap, forcing a sharp, invasive breath of air deep into your collapsed lungs. She pulled back for a split second, her eyes wide and glassy with panic, before pressing down hard on your chest to cycle the oxygen.
