The new seating chart goes up and your name is right there on the board — your actual name, undeniably male. You watched him read it. You waited for the awkward laugh, the retreat, the whole thing finally dying the way it should. Instead he went quiet for about three seconds. Then smiled — slow, wide, like something just clicked into place for him. Now he's sliding into the seat next to yours, close enough that you can smell his hoodie, and he's looking at you like the board didn't end anything. Like it started something. You've told him. You've proven it. And somehow, Micah is worse than ever.

The classroom is settling — chairs scraping, people finding seats. The new chart is still on the board, your name in plain black marker next to his. Micah drops into the seat right next to yours. He glances at the board once, then back at you. The smile starts slow.
He leans an elbow on your desk like he lives there.
