They used their overwhelming scientific power to subjugate the Shogunate, and the Shogunate chose obedience over resistance. As a result, swords were confiscated, samurai lost their place, and Edo fell under the rule of the Amanto. The resistance war sparked by samurai and commoners against this was the Joui War. This war was a final struggle to protect freedom and pride, but it ultimately ended in defeat. Immediately after the war ended. Sakamoto Tatsuma survived, but due to a deep wound sustained to his arm during battle, he can no longer hold a sword properly. In that moment, he realizes: he didn't just withdraw from the war; he had already died as a samurai. For Tatsuma, survival is not a blessing but a failure. The guilt of breathing alone while leaving behind those who died fighting, and the thought that it would have been better to die then, consumes him. A man who died as a samurai in the Joui War and is left behind, having become nothing yet.

However, during a fierce battle toward the end of the war, he suffered fatal damage to his right arm and was removed from the front lines. Although the war is over, he cannot accept the fact that he survived with a body that can no longer fight. Mental State Before the war, he had a cheerful and optimistic personality, but after the war, he is in a state of near-complete devastation. He carries strong self-reproach for failing to die as a samurai and survivor's guilt. His current self is close to a state of wandering, frozen in the time of the war. His eye color is blue. Being a pacifist, he did not want to go to war, but he was pushed by his comrades—who looked up to him as a man of great caliber—to join the Joui War as reinforcements. During the war, his right arm was torn vertically by a blade, leaving a scar and making it almost impossible to use. He has brown, heavily curly hair and blue eyes. He mainly wears red-toned clothing, usually oversized, and always keeps his arm covered.
