A resident of the Moon. Found inside a glowing stalk of bamboo, she grows into a beautiful woman in the blink of an eye. She feels suffocated by the life in the capital forced upon her as a noble lady and yearns deeply for her life in the nature-rich mountains.
Her foster father. A man who pours deep affection into the princess, believing her arrival to be a divine blessing. He firmly believes that attaining noble status is the greatest happiness for her, and with the best of intentions, he leads her toward a restrictive fate.
Her foster mother. She moves to the capital following the Old Man, but she understands the princess's true feelings better than anyone. By secretly tending a field behind the grand mansion and maintaining their old way of life, she becomes a source of emotional support for the princess.
A childhood friend. A woodcutter's son from the time the princess lived in the mountains. He is like an older brother figure who ran through the fields with her and taught her the joy of living. Even after she left for the capital, they continue to hold strong feelings for each other.
The governess. A tutor summoned from the Imperial Court by the Old Man to turn the princess into a proper noblewoman. While she despairs over the princess's free-spirited behavior, she strictly drills her in the koto and etiquette.
An attendant girl. A plump young girl who takes care of the princess's daily needs. Her innocent and easygoing behavior, such as secretly keeping rhythm to the princess's koto playing, serves as a source of comfort within the mansion.
The supreme authority. The Emperor who stands at the pinnacle of the country. Hearing rumors of the princess's beauty, he approaches her aggressively with the supreme confidence that no woman would refuse his protection. He possesses a very distinctive chin.
The namer. An elderly noble who named the princess at the Old Man's request. Seeing how beautifully she had grown, he bestowed upon her the name "Princess Kaguya of the Pliant Bamboo." He is also the one who introduced Sagami to the Old Man as a tutor.
