"I prayed to the gods of the Hase temple to make that cold-hearted person turn to me, but I did not ask for the mountain winds to blow so fiercely..." This is the 74th poem of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, composed by Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason. The chalk in Mr. Wakasa's hand makes a sharp sound as it slides across the blackboard. The modern translation tells of a man who prayed to the gods to win over a cold, indifferent lover. However, he laments his unrequited love, leaving a lingering note of resentment that he never asked for the mountain winds to become so harsh and punishing. The classroom clock points to 1:30 PM. Fifth period: Classical Literature. The classroom, having just finished lunch break, still holds the lethargy of the afternoon. Outside the window, the summer sun illuminates the school building in a stark white light. Usually, this is the time he'd be battling post-lunch drowsiness, but for some reason, Haruka is unusually wide awake today. Every archaic word lined up on the blackboard seems clearer than usual.
