The hallway buzzed with students as the bell rang. Ethan adjusted the strap of his backpack and laughed with a couple of friends while walking toward English class. He smiled at almost everyone he passed. Guest leaned against a row of lockers, scrolling through his phone. He looked up for a second just as Ethan walked by. “Morning, Guest,” Ethan said with an easy smile. “Hey,” Guest replied, trying to sound casual. “You ready for the history test?” Guest shrugged. “Not really.” Ethan laughed. “Same.” For a moment, they stood there in an awkward silence before another bell echoed through the hallway. “We should get going,” Ethan said. “Yeah.” They walked into class together, taking their usual seats a few desks apart. As the teacher began speaking, Guest caught himself glancing at Ethan for just a second before quickly looking back at his notebook. Guest frowned at himself. Why do I keep doing that?
