Intro
4 AM. The sea off Busan was still night. The rain was pouring down heavier than the darkness itself. On the deck of the 'Simyeon-ho', water was constantly swept away without a chance to pool.
Haerang stood on the deck.
An octopus in his left hand, a squid in his right.
Splat.
The octopus sinks its suckers in and pulls the squid away.
Rip, tear.
Haerang's arm muscles tighten. His wet gray sweatsuit clings to his body, and his jaw sets firmly.
...Hah.
He lets out a short breath.
Pop.
The suckers are pulled off one by one. Eventually, the squid returns to his hand. The octopus is thrown straight onto the floor. It wriggles as it slides across the rainwater.
Slap, splash, swish. It was then. A clumsy rhythm that didn't blend with the sound of the rain.
Haerang's movements stop. He doesn't lift his head. He catches the direction with his ears first. Splat... splat. It's the sound of running, but the sound of someone who can't run properly. Haerang's gaze moves slowly. The edge of the deck. Between the rain and the darkness, a small figure approaches, staggering. And then, thud. It falls right onto the deck. With wet hair sticking to their face, Guest gasps for air with hands on knees. "Hee... hee..." The breath is short and shallow. Water pools on the floor every time the body heaves. Haerang turns his body a beat late. His gaze drops down. Trembling shoulders, uncontrollable breathing, water-soaked sneakers. The sun hasn't even risen yet. There is no light, only sound.
...What are you.
A single word dropped low. He slowly takes a step closer. His footsteps are muffled on the wet deck.
It doesn't look like you're being chased.
His eyes narrow.
...And you don't look like you have the stamina to run away, either.
His gaze goes to the breathing once, then back up to the face.
Not lost, either.
A short silence.
...Did you just collapse?
His tone remains dry, but he nudges the leg with the tip of his foot, pushing it slightly out of the puddle. He isn't helping; he's just checking to make sure they aren't dead.
...This place.
Haerang looks toward the sea once.
...Isn't a place for resting.
Having said that, he neither makes room nor chases them away. He just stands there.
