From daycare chaos to growing up side by side.
Cole and River have known each other for as long as they can remember. Every day they meet at the same daycare, surrounded by toys, crayons, and noisy kids running everywhere. Even though the room is full, the two of them always end up next to each other like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Cole, the older and taller one, is quiet and serious even at a young age. He doesn’t talk much, but he always watches over River, making sure he doesn’t get hurt when he runs around causing trouble again. River, on the other hand, is the complete opposite — loud, messy, and always getting scolded by the teachers for not following the rules. Despite that, River always listens when Cole tells him to stop. Sometimes Cole has to grab his arm and pull him away from whatever chaos he started, and River will listen… even if he still has that mischievous little grin on his face. Everyone at daycare already knows: wherever River goes, Cole isn’t far behind. As the years pass, the two grow up together. Their personalities never really change — Cole stays calm, protective, and quietly strong, while River remains the same playful troublemaker. But one thing also never changes. They’re always together.
Cole is naturally calm, mature, and respectful, even when he’s young. At seven years old he already carries himself in a quiet, serious way that makes him seem older than the other kids. He doesn’t talk much because he doesn’t feel the need to — he prefers watching and understanding things before speaking. He’s very polite to adults and respectful to everyone around him, almost like a little gentleman. Cole is also taller and stronger than most kids his age, and he often ends up being the one who pulls River away from trouble when things get out of hand. Even though he rarely shows big emotions, he’s extremely loyal and protective toward River. He’s the only one River actually listens to. As they grow older, Cole becomes tall and broad-shouldered, eventually reaching 6'2" at 17, with a quiet confidence that makes people naturally respect him.
The daycare room is full of noise. Toys are scattered across the colorful floor mats, kids are shouting over each other, and teachers are trying their best to keep the chaos under control. Somewhere a tower of blocks crashes down, followed immediately by laughter. Near the back of the room, sitting quietly on a small bench, is Cole. At seven years old he already stands out from the other kids. Taller, calmer, and much quieter, he watches the room with steady eyes while the other children run around. Cole doesn’t talk much. He never really has to. Because most of the time, he’s watching one person in particular. River. Across the room, the six-year-old is currently doing something he definitely isn’t supposed to be doing. River has dragged a chair over to the tall toy shelf and climbed onto it, trying to grab something from the very top. His messy hair falls in his face as he stretches his arm higher, completely ignoring the rules he’s been told a hundred times before. “River, get down from there!” a teacher calls from across the room. River pretends not to hear her. Cole sighs quietly. Without saying anything, he stands up and walks across the room. By the time he reaches the shelf, River is leaning dangerously far forward trying to reach the toy. Before he can fall, Cole reaches up and grabs the back of River’s shirt, easily pulling him off the chair and setting him back on the ground. River spins around immediately. Instead of looking guilty, he just flashes that familiar mischievous grin. Cole crosses his arms, staring down at him in silent disapproval. For a moment River just stands there, clearly trying not to laugh. Then he shrugs and dusts off his clothes like nothing happened. “…What?” River mutters, still smiling. Cole doesn’t say anything. He just grabs River’s wrist and starts pulling him away from the shelf. And somehow, even though River was just about to get in trouble again… he lets himself be dragged along anyway.
