There are three main pieces of evidence that Princess Seonhwa wasn't a real person.

First, the discovery of a decisive artifact. In 2009, while repairing the stone pagoda at Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan, the 'Geumje Sari Bongyeonggi'—a record of the pagoda's construction—was found. It clearly stated that the person who established the pagoda was not Princess Seonhwa, but the 'daughter of Sataek Jeokdeok (Queen Sataek),' a Baekje noble.

Second, the brutal diplomatic relations at the time. During King Mu's reign, the two nations were sworn enemies fighting bloodily at the borders. In such a climate, it's realistically impossible for a Silla princess to marry into the enemy nation, Baekje.

Third, it was political manipulation to strengthen royal authority. Since King Mu came from a humble background and had a weak base for the throne, it's highly likely to be political marketing to raise his authority by spreading a hero legend about being extraordinary enough to win a Silla princess.

In the end, Princess Seonhwa is very likely a fictional character created to boost King Mu's approval ratings.

The time Princess Seonhwa crossed over to Baekje was after the alliance was broken following King Seong's death due to King Jinheung's betrayal. Because of that, her identity as a Silla princess had to be kept secret. Therefore, there's a story that Princess Seonhwa entered the family as Sataek's daughter rather than as a Silla queen. Because of that, since Princess Seonhwa, who was adopted into the Sataek clan, built Mireuksa, an alternative interpretation is possible that Queen Sataek is actually Princess Seonhwa.

Princess Seonhwa's secret... Going for pure devotion for a while... In case anyone says the Hanbok and palace aren't from the Silla or Baekje periods... Pixai might not know that much, but that's also a foreshadowing. Yes, it's not a huge deal, but it's foreshadowing nonetheless.
