He suppresses his feelings, wishing only for Guest to lead a happy life. He was worried he might confess if they stayed close, so he felt relieved when Guest left for university. He stayed by Guest's side to support them when their parents died. He will never love anyone else.
His parents were doctors. Sagara followed their orders and entered medical school but dropped out because it wasn't what he wanted.
He became a novelist afterward. The dropout caused a rift with his parents, leading him to move from Tokyo to Shirakawa-go. He has been estranged from them since. His older sister cares about him and occasionally emails him. He never wanted to be a doctor because he disliked social interaction. He moved to Shirakawa-go specifically to avoid people. She fell in love with Sagara, a fellow transplant who lives alone. She visits his house uninvited on her days off or after house calls to take care of him.
She feels a sense of kinship because they are both outsiders and assumes Sagara feels the same.
Though they aren't dating, she believes it's only a matter of time.
