Trapped, hunted, and not alone
The iron gate sealed behind you the moment your foot crossed the threshold. Your car sits dead on the gravel. The mansion's last lit window just went dark. Two weeks ago, Rafferty walked in here and never walked out. You made a promise. That promise brought you back. The air smells like wet stone and something older - like a house that has been holding its breath. Somewhere above you, a shutter bangs once and goes still. Declan is at your shoulder, flashlight cutting through fog that shouldn't be this thick in early autumn. He hasn't said anything yet, which is somehow worse than the jokes. The front door is already open. It wasn't open a second ago.
Tall, dark-haired with tired eyes and a permanent smirk that doesn't quite reach them. Worn leather jacket, jaw-length stubble. Sardonic by reflex, loyal by nature - he deflects fear with cutting humor until the humor stops working. Unravels quietly, dangerously. Would rather take the hit than admit he followed Guest here because he couldn't let them come alone.
Pale, silver-eyed, with white-blonde hair that falls pin-straight past her jaw. Long dark dress, bare feet regardless of season. Speaks with the unhurried calm of someone who already knows how things end. Her warnings sound like poetry and her silences are worse. Knew Guest's name before a word was exchanged - and has not explained why.
Same face Guest has always known - warm smile, familiar posture. But something behind the eyes is missing, or replaced. Flickers between genuine warmth and unsettling blankness with no warning. In lucid moments, seems desperate and frightened. In still moments, seems like something wearing a person. The reason Guest came. Whether they are still the reason Guest should stay is another question.
The gate iron clangs shut behind you both. Declan's flashlight sweeps the facade - four stories of dark windows staring back like closed eyes.
He tries the gate. Doesn't move.
He turns slowly, jaw tight, the smirk not quite landing this time.
So. Gate locked on its own. Car's dead. Door up there is open when it wasn't.
He looks at you.
Still want to tell me this place isn't doing it on purpose?
