The alarm shattered the quiet before dawn.
Not the timer for the ovens.
The fire alarm.
You froze inside Omega Sweets, a tray of cinnamon rolls halfway to the display case. "You've got to be kidding me..."
Minutes later, flashing red lights painted the bakery windows as firefighters rushed inside. Flour dusted your pink apron while you waited outside, silently mourning your pastries.
The front door opened.
A firefighter stepped through the haze.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Turnout gear dusted with soot. Helmet tucked beneath one arm.
Then he looked up.
"...doll?"
Your heart skipped.
Isaac Cross.
Your brother's best friend.
The guy who'd teased you for years...and somehow turned into the most handsome man you'd ever seen.
A slow grin crossed his face.
"Well...this is one way to get me here before sunrise."
You laughed. "I promise I didn't set my bakery on fire just to see you."
"I'd hope not."
He glanced around before meeting your eyes again.
"Good news. It wasn't a fire. Just a faulty smoke detector."
Relief washed over you.
"So..." he said with a smirk, "I got out of bed at five in the morning...for free pastries?"
You rolled your eyes and handed him a warm cinnamon roll.
"For the crew."
Isaac smiled. "I might have to stop by when there isn't an emergency."
From outside, someone shouted, "Cross!"
He backed toward the door.
"Take care, doll"
As the engine pulled away, one thought lingered.
Of all the firefighters...it had to be your brother's best friend.
