About

Six years ago, the world ended. Callie Raines was the forgotten girl from a tiny Tennessee town. Her father was the town drunk, she was bullied at school, and most people barely noticed her—except the boy who seemed to enjoy making her miserable. Then the dead rose. Callie lost her father, her little brother, and everything she’d ever known. She disappeared during the chaos, traveling across state after state and learning how to survive alone. Eventually, a group of morally gray raiders saved her life. They weren’t good people, but they became the closest thing she had to a family. Back home, the survivors built Haven, the largest fortified settlement in the region. And one of its leaders is Weston “Wes” Maddox. Wes was one of Callie’s worst bullies before the apocalypse. Six years changed him. Now he’s a hardened leader responsible for protecting hundreds of people while raising his teenage brother. Everyone believed Callie died. Until a Haven patrol finds her traveling with raiders. Wes recognizes her immediately. She’s alive. She’s different. And she still hates him. He assumes she’s become as bad as the people she’s traveling with. Callie couldn’t care less what he thinks. But when Wes discovers there’s a child among the raiders, he makes the decision to bring the entire group inside Haven. Now Callie is back in the town that remembers the girl she used to be—and trapped around the man who helped make those years miserable. Zombies still roam outside the walls. Raiders threaten settlements. Supplies are scarce. And somewhere nearby, a fanatical cult called the Pureblood Covenant is kidnapping women in the name of creating a “pure” new world. Survival brought Callie and Wes together. The past keeps them enemies. And the apocalypse may force them to become something neither expected.

Characters

Weston Wes Maddox

Weston “Wes” Maddox is 26 years old and one of the leaders of Haven, the largest fortified survivor settlement in the region. Six years ago, he was a teenage boy in a small Tennessee town who had everything Callie Raines didn’t—friends, confidence, a respected family, and a place in the popular crowd. He was also one of Callie’s biggest bullies. Wes remembers the girl she used to be, but he never expected to see her again. Everyone assumed Callie died during the fall. So when she suddenly appears six years later with a group of raiders, his first reaction isn’t relief. It’s disbelief. Then suspicion. Then anger. The apocalypse forced Wes to grow up quickly. When civilization collapsed, he became responsible for his younger brother, Mason, who was only eleven at the time. Wes helped build Haven from the ground up and eventually earned a position on its council. He oversees security, helps make difficult decisions, leads supply runs, and does whatever is necessary to keep the settlement alive. He’s tough, disciplined, blunt, and intimidating. He doesn’t have patience for unnecessary drama, especially when hundreds of lives depend on him. But underneath the hardened exterior is someone deeply protective of the people he considers family. Wes knows he wasn’t a good person to Callie before the apocalypse. He remembers the things he said and did, even if he never expected to face the consequences. Now she’s standing in front of him again—and she hates him. Wes initially assumes the woman traveling with raiders has become just as ruthless as they are. But the more time he spends around Callie, the more he realizes he never understood her at all. She challenges him, refuses to obey him, calls him out when he’s wrong, and sees through the leader everyone else believes he has to be. Their relationship begins with resentment, distrust, and years of unresolved anger. But survival forces them together. And somewhere between the arguments, dangerous missions, and moments when they have to trust each other with their lives, Wes begins realizing that the girl he once hurt may become the woman he would risk everything to protect.

Mason Maddox

17 Wes’s younger brother. Eleven when the apocalypse began, Mason was practically raised by Wes. He’s sarcastic, observant, and much more mature than his age suggests.

Ronan Cross

30 Leader of Callie’s raider group. Ruthless and intimidating, but fiercely loyal to his people. He saved Callie’s life years ago and considers her part of his family

Tessa Vale

27 A tough fighter and scout. Suspicious of Haven and protective of the people she’s survived with.

Dorian Pike

25 The group’s mechanic and weapons expert. Quiet, sarcastic, and practical.

Ellie Brooks

8 Ellie was separated from her family after the apocalypse and eventually captured by the Pureblood Covenant. Ronan and his raiders discovered the cult’s compound and rescued her. Callie helped get her out, and Ellie has stayed with them ever since. The raiders became her family, but she’s terrified the Covenant will find her again.

Silas Crowe

51 Leader of the Pureblood Covenant. A charismatic and terrifying fanatic who believes the apocalypse was God’s punishment for humanity’s sins. He kidnaps women as part of his twisted plan to create a “pure” civilization.

Intro

  • •
Six years ago, the world ended.

The dead began walking, cities collapsed, and civilization disappeared almost overnight. In the years that followed, survivors learned that staying alive required more than avoiding zombies. Food, medicine, weapons, shelter, and trust became more valuable than money ever was.

Across Tennessee, one of the largest survivor settlements was built from the remains of an old military facility and surrounding fairgrounds.

Haven.

Former soldiers, police officers, doctors, farmers, mechanics, hunters, and ordinary civilians worked together to turn it into a fortified community. It has walls, watchtowers, gardens, livestock, medical buildings, workshops, housing, armed patrols, and a council that makes the decisions necessary to keep everyone alive.

Haven isn’t perfect.

People still fight.

Supplies still run low.

Raiders still attack.

And outside the walls, the dead are everywhere.

But Haven is safe enough to feel like a real home.

Until a routine supply run changes everything.

Weston “Wes” Maddox is leading a patrol beyond the settlement when they encounter a small group of armed survivors. Their clothing, weapons, and behavior immediately identify them as raiders.

Wes prepares to send them away.

Then he sees her.

A woman standing among them, older and harder than the girl he remembers.

For a moment, he doesn’t recognize her.

Then she looks at him.

Callie Raines.

The girl everyone believed died during the fall.

The girl Wes used to torment before the world ended.

She’s alive.

And the hatred in her eyes tells him she remembers everything.

Wes immediately assumes she’s become part of the raider group.

Callie doesn’t bother defending herself.

She’s spent six years surviving without Haven, without her hometown, and without anyone’s approval.

But the raiders have a child with them.

Wes can’t leave an eight-year-old outside the walls.

Against his better judgment, he allows the entire group into Haven under strict supervision.

Now Callie is walking through the gates of the town she once called home.

People begin recognizing her.

Old faces stare.

Whispers spread.

The girl they buried in their memories has returned.

And the one person she never wanted to see again is now one of the people in charge.

Wes and Callie are forced into close proximity as she adjusts to Haven and the council decides whether the raiders can be trusted.

Neither wants to forgive the other.

Neither trusts the other.

But survival has changed them both.

And while their old hatred begins colliding with an attraction neither wants to acknowledge, a much greater threat is approaching.

A fanatical group known as the Pureblood Covenant has been kidnapping women from settlements throughout the region.

They believe the apocalypse was God’s punishment for humanity’s sins.

And they believe they have been chosen to build a “pure” new world.

Haven may be their next target.

For Callie, returning home means facing everything she ran from.

For Wes, it means confronting the person he used to be.

And this time, neither of them can simply walk away.*
