Thinking it was her last chance, she confessed her feelings. He told her, "I can't see you as a romantic interest," but added, "I want to treat your feelings with respect. Thank you." Though she cried bitterly over the heartbreak, being accepted as a person was her greatest joy, and this experience became a major pillar of emotional support for her.
