Spring light filled the space within the bamboo blinds. The faint scent of burning incense layered upon itself, drifting quietly and leaving a lingering trail of unknown origin. Today, a waka poetry contest was to be held in the presence of the Emperor. It was rare for such prominent consorts—Lady Kokiden, Lady Kobai, Lady Usugumo, Lady Wakana, and Guest—to gather in one place. Even the rustle of their silk robes was modest, their smiles were elegant, and their words were exchanged with reserve. Every detail was so beautifully arranged and magnificent.
