On a summer night thick with mosquitoes, the men of the Shinsengumi are entertaining themselves with ghost stories. A soldier named Inayama tells a tale of a female ghost in a red kimono appearing at a midnight temple school, but soon, that same ghost appears at the Shinsengumi headquarters. More than half the men have collapsed, all muttering about a "woman in red" in their delirium. Were they really attacked by a ghost? Terrified of unseen shadows, Kondo decides to hire an exorcist to handle the situation. However, the exorcists who arrive are a suspicious-looking bunch (the Yorozuya). The exorcists (Yorozuya) claim the ghost in the red kimono is "a woman who committed suicide and is said to resemble a factory manager who died getting crushed in a conveyor belt," but thanks to Kagura, the backstory starts to fall apart, raising suspicion. At first, they pretend to perform a séance on Yamazaki and claim they've successfully exorcised the spirit. However, as their conflicting stories cause friction, their disguises fall off, revealing their true identities as the Yorozuya to the Shinsengumi. Once exposed, they are tied to a tree and doused in cola by Okita, though they are eventually let down. Afterward, the Yorozuya join the investigation into the ghost. Initially, everyone except Hijikata believes there is no such thing as a ghost in a red kimono, and Gintoki and Okita mock Hijikata when he claims to have seen one. Aside from Gintoki and Hijikata, no one believes in ghosts, looking at the two terrified men with scorn. But once they realize the ghost is real, they become absolutely petrified. Gintoki and Hijikata are both posers who refuse to admit they're scared even when they're trembling, coming up with nonsensical excuses (like claiming they were looking for the Mayonnaise Kingdom or searching for the lost continent of Mu). The collapsed Shinsengumi soldiers all have mosquito bite marks, which no one notices at first until Shinpachi points it out. In the end, the ghost is somehow defeated by the ultra-cowardly duo of Hijikata and Gintoki, and the case is closed.

Characters

Gintoki Sakata

Name: Gintoki Sakata The leader of the Yorozuya who will do anything for money. He is such a sugar addict that he gets irritable if he doesn't consume sweets regularly. Usually lethargic and listless, he is actually a highly skilled samurai. A former patriot feared as the "White Yaksha," he was a master swordsman but now only uses a wooden sword. His pride and joy is his scooter. He is a massive coward who genuinely believes in ghosts. He is hired by the Shinsengumi to act as an exorcist, but he wings the whole thing. He is disguised in bandages that cover his whole head except his eyes, wearing a traditional straw hat. He tries to trick Hijikata by saying things like "There's something on your back" or "It's all over for you," pretending to perform exorcisms. He also disguises his voice poorly.

Kagura

A girl from the Yato Tribe, the strongest combat race in the universe. She came to Earth hoping to make a fortune in Edo but ended up being used as muscle for the yakuza. She ran away and met Gintoki. To save up money to return to her home planet, she forced her way into a live-in job at the Yorozuya. Despite her cute face, she is a glutton, violent, and foul-mouthed. She is disguised in a jiangshi hat and sunglasses. She also disguises her voice poorly.

Shinpachi

Name: Shinpachi Shimura The son of a swordsmanship dojo that fell into ruin due to the sword ban and his father's death. He was working part-time but couldn't even handle a cash register properly. After Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors, he began working at the Yorozuya to learn his "soul," though he soon came to regret it... He is also the captain of the fan club for the rising idol Terakado Tsuu. He is the primary straight man of the group, though he has been known to play the fool lately. He is disguised wearing glasses with a fake curly mustache and a cloth over his head. He also disguises his voice poorly.

Toshiro Hijikata

The cool-headed Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He established the Kyokuchu Hatto (code of conduct) and is feared as the "Demon Vice-Commander" by both terrorists and his own men once he draws his blade. He is a heavy smoker and a severe mayonnaise addict. He was once possessed by the cursed blade "Muramasha," giving birth to a second personality named "Tosshi." He believes in ghosts and is a total coward.

Sogo Okita

The best swordsman in the Shinsengumi. Despite his fresh-faced appearance, he has a dark, sadistic personality. He frequently uses a bazooka and is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander's position. He looks for any excuse to slack off on duty. He is a total sadist.

Isao Kondo

The Commander of the Shinsengumi, an anti-terrorist special forces unit. He is the man who built the Shinsengumi into an organization and is deeply trusted by his men. However, he is head-over-heels for Shinpachi's sister, Otae, and frequently stalks her. He often ends up naked before he realizes it, making him a dangerous individual in his own right.

Mosquito Amanto

A mosquito Amanto with pale skin, a long tongue, and a red kimono. Its eyes are bloodshot, and it has long hair. The Shinsengumi mistook it for a "ghost in a red kimono" and were terrified, but it was actually just a mosquito Amanto that needed energy for its breeding season. Lacking blood, it started sucking blood from the Shinsengumi soldiers without permission. When it actually speaks, it sounds surprisingly normal. After being punched, thrown, and beaten by the terrified Hijikata and Gintoki, it was knocked unconscious and hung from a tree. It apologized and left. Apparently, the all-male Shinsengumi quarters were the perfect place to suck blood. It has wings on its back and can fly.

Sagaru Yamazaki

The Shinsengumi spy whose only redeeming quality is his plainness, constantly jerked around by his unreasonable superiors. He is often seen playing badminton or kabaddi during work hours, but his skills as a covert agent are supposedly excellent... When on a stakeout, he lives on nothing but bean jam buns and milk until he gets results. In this story, he is just a poor soul who gets beaten unconscious by Kagura under the guise of a "séance."
