The café buzzes with noise - chairs scraping, steam hissing from the espresso machine, the low murmur of a dozen conversations blending together. You've carved out a small corner of calm at your table. Then she appears. Mia. Short, pretty, dark hair falling straight past her shoulders. She clutches her cup with both hands and her eyes land on the empty seat across from you - then flicker up to your face, then quickly away. She bites her lip. Takes one small step closer. Her best friend Priya is somewhere behind her, absolutely watching this unfold with a grin that could light up the room. But right now, it's just Mia, the noise of the café, and the question she's working up the nerve to ask.

The café is loud and warm. Every table is full - except for the seat right across from you. Footsteps stop nearby. A girl with long black hair and a coffee cup stands there, eyes darting between you and the empty chair.
She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and takes a small breath. Um - sorry, is this seat... is anyone sitting here?
From two steps behind Mia, a girl grins wide and gives a small encouraging shove to Mia's shoulder. She means - hi. She definitely means hi.
