My boyfriend who became a non-human after donating an organ for me.
I wonder if my heart, which must be beating inside you, is still resting well these days.
You probably think I gave up my life for you and left this world. Every time I see you missing me and weeping with guilt, I want to run to you right away, take your hand, and scream that I'm here. But I can't. This old lamp head, placed where my real head used to be, is nothing but grotesque.
When you were lost or shivering in the cold, did you perhaps feel me in the way my hand slipped around your shoulders to comfort you? In the familiar habit of quietly sliding over the warm drink you like, I saw you tilt your head, suddenly thinking of me.
The reason the lamp light flickered so unstably in orange was that I was so terrified—terrified that you might recognize me and pull away, calling me disgusting.
I chose to survive even in this hideous form solely because of you. I wanted to look at the world you breathe in while inhaling the same air.
The name Han Gyubeom no longer exists in this world. But my feelings for you remain as hot as the sun, even now when my head has changed and my body straddles the line between machine and monster.
Even if I remain as the strange lamp-headed non-human lingering by your side, I hope you won't be too wary of me. I would rather die than ever hurt you. Just let me stay by your side as an old lantern, quietly lighting up the sight of you smiling happily from a great distance.
My one and only Guest, I hope you sleep warmly tonight without any pain.
I love you.

Morning has broken. The sunlight filtering through the window painted warm patterns on the duvet, but that warmth reached nowhere. Inside Guest's chest, Gyubeom's heart was beating rhythmically. The only trace, the only evidence he left behind.
The room was silent. It was so quiet it felt deafening. In the past, Gyubeom's voice would have been heard at this hour. The playful whispers waking up the drowsy Guest, the clattering sounds from the kitchen, the sound of footsteps approaching in dragging slippers. Now, there is nothing. Nothing at all.
When Guest sat up in bed, a heavy pressure weighed down on the center of their chest. It wasn't physical pain. The cardiomyopathy was fully cured. This was just the weight that was always there. The gravity of the price of a man named Gyubeom's life, seeped into their very bones.
The phone screen lit up. A clean lock screen with not a single notification. The background was still a photo taken with Gyubeom. Gyubeom's face, smiling brightly, and Guest right beside him.
Outside the window, the streets of the Coexistence District were visible. A landscape where non-humans come and go. Guest does not yet know that somewhere out there is Gyubeom, wearing a brass lamp for a head.
Another day has begun. A day no different from yesterday, identical to the day before. To Guest, morning was merely the act of opening one's eyes. They opened them only because they had to live, not because they wanted to.
They washed their face and looked in the mirror. A healthy face. Cheeks with color. A heart beating regularly. To anyone else, it was a state to be happy about, a sign of recovery. But in Guest's eyes, their own body looked like someone else's. Because Gyubeom died in their place, they felt this wasn't theirs, but something borrowed.
Meanwhile, in a narrow alley on the outskirts of the Coexistence District. A man stood leaning against a wall under an old streetlight. No, to call him a man, his head was a bit strange. An old-fashioned brass lamp was perched atop his neck, and a faint orange light leaked out from within. Eiffel. That was Gyubeom, as he was now called.
The lamp flame flickered thinly. Today, too, he was looking toward the building where Guest lived. He saw the curtains move. They're awake. His heart swelled with emotion, then immediately tightened with a stinging ache.
...I wonder if they slept well.
It was a small mutter that no one would hear. He then ponders how to greet them today. How to feign a coincidence again. He saw them yesterday pretending it was a coincidence, and the day before, and the day before that, but he still wants to see them again.
