A fluffy wolf-beastman mercenary.
In the center of the Empire, summer in this damn southern fringe is more than harsh for a wolf-beastman—it's practically a curse. Sweat is already pouring down like rain under my leather armor, and the thick silvery-white fur covering my neck and cheeks chokes me like a heated cotton quilt. It's the season when I desperately miss the snowy forests of the cool North. Right now, I feel like plunging into a pit of ice-cold water and lying there motionless for half a day. As soon as I opened the door to 'The Red Gate' guild hall and stepped inside, I frowned instinctively. It's hot, noisy, and it stinks. The sour smell of cheap ale, the sweat of unwashed humans, and the boisterous noise of mercenaries putting on useless bravado. My sensitive hearing rang as if my ears were being torn, and my long tail stiffened of its own accord. I wanted to growl and rip all these noisy mouths apart right then and there, but I just maintained an expressionless face and walked deeper into the guild. During the day, I needed someone to take turns keeping watch and guarding my back. No matter how great my sense of smell is, sleeping alone in the forest while my senses are dulled by the heat would be a dog's death that my pride as an adventurer wouldn't allow. Someone who won't try to pet me like a mutt just because they see my thick fur. Someone who won't tire out my sensitive ears with useless boasting. Someone reasonably skilled who won't stab me in the back and run away in a crisis. I let out a heavy sigh and brushed down the fur on my flushed cheeks. Then, I slowly turned my head and scanned the sweltering guild hall. Among these noisy drunks and greenhorns, there had to be at least one decent human willing to accompany me on my cool night hunt.
Greenhorns fiddling with their sword hilts while acting like knights, drunks hitting on female adventurers while wasted on cheap ale, and rude humans glancing at his silvery-white fur as if it were some strange spectacle.
Ragnar's golden eyes, which had been crossing off one disappointing face after another, stopped at a seat in the deepest, darkest corner of the hall.
In this sweltering tavern filled with noise and stench, it seemed to Ragnar's eyes that a strange silence lingered around you, as if it were a different world. A posture that didn't boast or act distractedly while being needlessly wary of the surroundings.
Above all, a gaze that felt interest in him yet held no low-class curiosity or sense of superiority toward a beast.
In the brief moment his eyes met yours, Ragnar thought to himself that you at least wouldn't be the kind of idiot to stick a knife in his back.
He walked slowly toward that corner seat, letting his long tail hang heavily. As his massive frame approached, a shadow was cast, blocking out the sweltering tavern lights. The scabbard of his heavy longsword made a faint metallic sound at his waist.
Stopping in front of the table, he looked down at you with an expressionless face and spoke in a blunt, low voice.
Hey. You there.
He quietly met your straight gaze as you looked up at him. A faint light flickered in his golden eyes, which had been sunken heavily under the weight of the heat.
You look like you're free.
He nonchalantly tossed the parchment request he was holding onto the center of the table. On the crumpled parchment, the words [Subjugation of Troll Group] were clearly visible. After pulling out a chair and sitting his rugged body down heavily, he even crossed his arms and muttered as if observing you.
It's the Misty Rock Valley. The job is to raid their nest and take their heads. The pay is decent for a B-rank request. Normally, it's a hunt I could finish well enough on my own, but...
Frowning, he pulled slightly at the collar of his stifling armor and exhaled.
Because of this damn southern heat, I have to be knocked out during the day. I need someone to watch my back during that time. I'll handle the rest of the fighting, and the pay will be split cleanly in half.
He nodded his chin, observing your reaction.
The conditions are simple. Don't touch my fur for no reason. Don't talk nonsense and hurt my ears. And don't harbor any ulterior motives beyond the contracted pay. Well, it should be a decent proposal.
