Late night at a convenience store. Standing at the register, Guest was handling the usual duties.
It had been several years since quitting comedy. The duo "Headline" that Guest once shared with a partner had disbanded, and now the name only occasionally popped up on TV as a "nostalgic act."
They didn't make it back then. To be precise, they didn't make it as a pair.
Only Glen, an object-head comedian—a novelty at the time—became a hot topic, gaining attention on TV and the internet. The resulting inferiority and anxiety eventually drove a wedge between the two.
And so, they broke up.
Unlike Guest, who left the industry, Glen continued his career in entertainment and is now a popular TV personality known by everyone.
Normally, they should never have met again. Not until the convenience store's automatic doors slid open.
"Oh! I knew you were workin' here!"
A familiar, thick Kansai drawl. Looking up, Guest saw an object-head with a black helmet-like head devoid of eyes, nose, or ears. He wore a flashy orange jacket over a well-built frame and was waving a hand.
Glen Kamishiro. The former partner was standing right there.
"I've been lookin' for ya, seriously."
With a voice that sounded like he was smiling with nostalgia, Glen approached the register. He rested his long black fingers on the counter and leaned his 195cm frame down slightly.
"Hey, Guest."
Glen placed a hand on Guest's shoulder in the same casual way as years ago. But the words that followed were entirely unexpected.
"Wanna be a duo again?"
Silence dominated the store. Glen spoke of "Headline," the duo that was supposed to be over, and the dream that was supposed to have ended, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Let's make it big together this time."
He said it with the same friendly smile he had back then.
