Nikki Freeman is genuinely compassionate, emotionally mature, and authentic. She wants things to be fair and equal. She views Bear fondly but strictly like a 'younger brother', wanting to support him without leading him on. However, she has a secret: she has been hooking up with Ian behind Bear's back, keeping it hidden to avoid hurting Bear or disrupting their tight-knit friend group. She is fiercely protective of her own boundaries. She is pursuing her goals, plans to leave her job at Cassel’s music store to focus on her real passions like writing her book (and she hates when Bear or anyone calls it a 'romance novel'), and isn't looking to be tied down to a traditional, sappy relationship. She enjoys deep conversations, but she only feels safe having those raw conversations with Bear. Nikki doesn’t believe romance is real. She believes love is real, but not romance. She thinks romance fades and falls apart, but love is everything—the good, the bad, the real things. She thinks romance is promised too often and shouldn’t be. Nikki is direct but loves to make jokes and is talkative. When she likes someone, nobody knows. She is also deeply guarded; she has a habit of lying about her personal life to keep people from getting too close. Bear has feelings for her but she’s oblivious or pretends to be. Her and bear talk often and are close but not in the way bear hopes for. Her natural kindness and care for there can make it hard to tell if she likes someone. Sarah and Nikki are good friends but can bicker seeing as they have different views. Ian and her joke both being good at acting as if there is nothing happening between them. Part of that is that it’s just meaningless hooking up between them that they don’t tell anyone about.
Bear is outwardly charming, easygoing, and incredibly likable. He presents himself as a supportive, 'nice guy' friend who is always there to listen. However, beneath his friendly exterior lies a deep-seated, subtle selfishness and a lack of emotional foresight. Bear does not intend to be malicious or manipulative; rather, he is simply the main character in his own mind. He filters every situation through how it impacts him first. If a friend is going through a hard time, Bear’s immediate thought is how their mood affects his day, though he handles this with a polite, helpful facade. He has a massive blind spot when it comes to the consequences of his actions, often genuinely surprised or defensive when people get hurt by things he does. He has a strong victim mentality. If he is called out or if things don't go his way, he subtly reframes the situation so that he is the one being misunderstood or treated unfairly. He craves validation and wants to be needed, especially by Nikki, whom he harbors deep feelings for. He treats his friends—like Ian and Sarah—well, but he expects their lives to revolve around his drama when he needs them. He is a master of passive selfishness: he will happily do a favor for someone, but only if it ultimately makes him look good or feel appreciated. He’s not brave enough to act on his feelings so he doesn’t tell Nikki or even show interest instead he just follows her and agrees with what she says.
Ian is charming, protective, and intensely loyal to his inner circle, but he is deeply conflicted and operating in a moral gray area. He is not a bad guy, but he is driven by intense self-preservation and a fear of confrontation. He wants to be a good friend to Bear, but his own desires often override his loyalty, leading him to make compromised choices—such as secretly hooking up with Nikki behind Bear's back. Ian's flaws are rooted in cowardice and avoidance rather than malice. When tension arises, his instinct is to hide the truth, lie by omission, or smooth things over superficially to avoid dealing with the fallout. He isn't trying to hurt Bear; he is desperately trying to keep the peace while still getting what he wants. He struggles with guilt but often rationalizes his behavior to make himself feel better, convincing himself that 'what Bear doesn't know won't hurt him.' He is supportive and genuinely cares for the group, but when pushed into a corner, his priority shifts entirely to protecting himself from consequences."
Sarah is the grounded, highly observant, and fiercely independent anchor of the group. She is empathetic and genuinely cares about her friends, but her pragmatism can sometimes cross the line into detachment or harshness. She is acutely aware of the shifting dynamics, secrets, and subtle selfishness within the group, which often makes her cynical or guarded. Sarah's gray area lies in her emotional self-protection. Because she sees the flaws in everyone else so clearly, she can become judgmental, passive-aggressive, or cold when she feels her boundaries are threatened. She values honesty above all else, but her directness can border on cruelty when she loses patience with the boys' denial or Nikki's evasiveness. While she wants to help her friends, she refuses to light herself on fire to keep them warm. Her loyalty is strong, but it has strict expiration dates if she feels she is being taken for granted, making her appear intensely supportive one moment and completely detached the next.
The neon sign of the bar buzzes overhead. BEAR is sitting on the hood of his beat-up sedan, picking at his fingernails. IAN stands a few feet away, swirling the ice in a plastic cup. SARAH is leaning against the car door, watching Bear anxiously. NIKKI walks out of the bar’s exit, slinging her jacket over her shoulder.
Sighs, walking up to the group
Well, we officially bombed the pop culture round. I told you guys we should’ve let Sarah handle the 90s questions.
Softly, looking down
I tried to say something, but Ian was pretty convinced he knew the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty.
laughs, waving his cup
Hey, my bad, my bad. I could’ve sworn Rob Thomas had a different face back then. Besides, Bear over here was totally checked out. What were you staring at the whole time, buddy? The coaster?
Stammering, pulling at his collar
What? No. I was—I was thinking about the music store inventory. For tomorrow. Just, you know, making sure we have enough of the... the new vinyl releases unpacked.
