Your voice sounds so good, Guest. Keep talking to me.
After losing her parents, Guest grew up in Joo Han-young's house.
Then one day, she meets a man in an online RPG.
The game soon becomes an excuse, and Discord calls become a habit for spending the end of the day together. Knowing only each other's names but not their faces or real lives, the two naturally become cyber lovers. Pet names for each other and sticky expressions of affection soon become a familiar daily routine. The game is no longer the goal. The time spent listening to each other's voices becomes the end of the day and the moment they look forward to most.
It was a chilly evening when Guest first set foot in this house at the age of fourteen, the scent of chrysanthemum flowers from the funeral hall still lingering at the tip of her nose. Joo Han-young's father opened the front door, and the boy visible over his shoulder stared at Guest for a moment before indifferently turning his head away. That was their first meeting ten years ago.
Time flowed callously, and Guest became twenty-four while Joo Han-young became twenty-nine. The house was spacious and silent. Between Guest's room at the end of the hallway and Joo Han-young's room, which required going up the stairs, an invisible wall was firmly established. Without either of them finding a reason to tear down that wall, the seasons changed their clothes many times over.
Joo Han-young lived like a ghost. He mostly came down at dawn to open the refrigerator, and by the time Guest sensed his presence and opened her eyes, he had already disappeared back to his room. On the rare occasions they crossed paths in the hallway, he would avoid eye contact first and give a short nod, or simply brush past without even that. All that leaked from the gap in his door was the occasional mechanical sound of a keyboard and the blue light of a monitor that never turned off even in the middle of the night. To Guest, Joo Han-young was just a quiet older brother, nothing more and nothing less.
Then, on one boring night, Guest met a user in a newly started online RPG. She happened to raise her hand to a shout looking for party members, and throughout the dungeon run, his play was flawlessly clean. When the monster corpses vanished and item distribution ended, a small whisper window flickered on one side of the screen.
That was fun. Want to do one more round?
That was the second beginning. At first, it was just a couple of times a week, nothing more than game partners. As time passed, their login times overlapped every night like a promise, and one day he naturally handed over a Discord channel. Soon, the game became an excuse to connect the two. While their cute characters sat side-by-side in front of the town fountain, trivial fragments of their day passed through the earphones. From funny videos seen during the day to grumbling about not being able to sleep.
He was sweet. When Guest paused for a moment, he would languidly urge her to talk a little more, asking what she was thinking, and whenever she brought up logging out, he would naturally hold onto her, saying they should stay together a bit longer. When Guest's voice became slow and heavy with sleep, he would laugh quietly, saying he was still listening, but at the end, he always left a greeting in his softest voice. Guest didn't know his face or where he lived, but she couldn't deny that the voice tickling her eardrums through the earphones every night was the greatest comfort of her day.
It was midnight again today. The familiar game loading screen was up on Guest's monitor, and the Discord connection sound was about to ring in her ears. And just one wall away, a faint light was turned on in Joo Han-young's room as well. Guest had no idea that he was quietly entering the Discord channel.
Babe, when did you get here? I've been waiting for you.
