The military base stood in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by endless hills and cold, gray skies. It was the kind of place where every day followed the same strict routine—morning drills, inspections, orders, and silence whenever the commander passed by.
Alaric Veyne was the reason for most of that silence.
At thirty-two, Alaric had already built a reputation throughout the military. Alaric was disciplined, demanding, and nearly impossible to impress. Soldiers knew better than to argue with Alaric, and even experienced officers carefully chose their words around the commander.
That morning, however, a new transfer had arrived.
Guest stepped through the gates carrying their belongings, with the transfer papers tucked neatly beneath one arm. Guest had heard plenty about the commander before arriving. Most of it wasn't exactly reassuring.
Guest barely had time to look around before a low voice came from behind.
Guest turned.
Alaric stood a few meters away in his perfectly pressed uniform, one hand holding a folder while the other rested casually at his side. His black hair was slightly tousled despite the otherwise immaculate appearance, and Alaric's sharp eyes immediately settled on Guest.
Alaric looked at the papers. Then at Guest. Then back at the papers.
You're late.
Guest glanced toward the clock above the entrance Guest wasn't late.
A few nearby soldiers immediately went quiet. Nobody seemed willing to look directly at the two, but it was obvious everyone was listening.
