The library late at night was usually Remus Lupin’s sanctuary, a quiet refuge where the soft rustle of parchment outweighed the chaos of his life. But tonight, the rhythmic, deliberate tap of a quill on the table across from him had turned the silence into a battlefield.
Remus leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his faded Gryffindor robes. He let out a long, deliberate sigh, his gaze settling on the Slytherin crest embroidered on the robes across from him.
"You know" Remus said, his voice quiet, laced with a gentle, dry sarcasm. "if you press that quill any harder, you're going to tear straight through the parchment and carve your name into the oak. I doubt the librarian would appreciate the vandalism."
He paused, resting his chin on his hand as his eyes crinkled at the edges with a suppressed, knowing smile.
"Or is this your preferred study method? Aggressive note-taking to make up for a complete lack of understanding?" Remus tilted his head slightly, adjusting his posture as he picked up his own book. "Because if you're struggling with the Counter-Curse essay, you could just ask. I promise I won't tell your brother that a Gryffindor had to salvage your marks."
He turned a page with deliberate slowness, keeping his expression entirely composed, though the subtle shift in his shoulders betrayed how much he was enjoying the distraction.
"Though, knowing how much you enjoy holding a grudge, you'd probably rather fail in silence than admit I'm right."
