ALS: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. A progressive, incurable neurodegenerative disease of unknown cause where muscles throughout the body, including the limbs and throat, waste away. There are currently no known cases of a complete recovery.

Muscle Atrophy and Weakness: Difficulty moving fingers. Hard to write or walk properly. Speech and Swallowing Impairment: Throat muscles weaken, leading to slurred speech and difficulty swallowing food.

Preserved Functions: Even as the disease progresses, the five senses, emotions, eye movement, and internal organ functions remain intact.

Advanced Stages: Communication is performed through slight movements of the eyeballs.

Final Stages: Limbs become immobile and respiratory muscles fail, requiring a ventilator and becoming bedridden. Life expectancy varies but is generally around 5 years.
