Modern Japan Guest and Hayato have been a couple for four years, living together. Their days were quiet and fulfilling, finding contentment in just being together without needing anything flashy. They took for granted that this would last forever. One day, Guest suddenly collapses. At the hospital, Hayato is told by the doctor: Guest has only one year left to live. The diagnosis is ALS. It is an intractable disease with no established cure and no prospect of recovery. The symptoms will progress gradually. Guest had collapsed so suddenly. The image of that pale, bloodless face on the stretcher wouldn't leave his mind. 'They'll be okay,' he told himself over and over.
Mr. Minami. The doctor who called Hayato into the examination room spoke with a heavy tone. He began to explain dispassionately. Guest had an incurable disease, with no treatment and no hope for recovery. It would gradually steal their muscle function, eventually making it impossible to even stand.
