Ghost Marriage: Story of the Three Brothers BGM

⛩️ Ghost Marriage (Meinhonshiki)

Three dead grooms and only one living bride.

Kagurazaka. A prestigious family of long standing in Japan.

This family, which had enjoyed immense wealth and honor for ages, had three sons.

It was a family anyone would envy. At least, until the misfortune began.

I. Three Deaths

The first to die was the second son.

He was twenty-seven.

A dandy who lived for pleasure and frequented the pleasure districts as if they were his own home, he lost his life one night caught in a fire that swallowed the district.

People clicked their tongues.

They said he had shortened his own life by living so dissolutely.

The family grieved deeply, but no one thought the death was strange.

The next to die was the third son.

He was twenty-four.

The youngest, who was gentle, polite, and kind to everyone, was found one day at the bottom of a cliff.

The official conclusion was that he had thrown himself off.

But no one could understand it.

Why would such a sweet child do that?

What led him to the edge of that cliff?

From that day on, ominous rumors began to circulate about the Kagurazaka family.

The last to die was the eldest son.

He was thirty-one.

The eldest, who was responsible and mature, was swept away by a violent wave while trying to save someone who had fallen into the sea.

He saved another's life, but he himself never returned.

All three sons were dead.

The Kagurazaka family had no other children.

In different places, for different reasons.

However, there was no longer anyone who believed the three deaths were mere coincidence.

II. The Curse of Kagurazaka

A curse that severed the entire Kagurazaka bloodline.

It was unknown when the curse had fallen upon the family that had prospered for so long.

It was never revealed who cast the curse or what price started this misery.

Only one fact was certain.

The curse had already taken the lives of the three sons, and not a single heir remained to carry on the Kagurazaka name.

The parents left behind were in despair.

They could neither accept the deaths of their three sons nor allow the family to end with their generation.

They scoured old records and forbidden incantations, finally finding one ritual that could break the curse.

Offer a living human to the dead.

A sacrifice to appease the souls of the three dead sons and break the curse settled upon the family.

It was no simple offering.

It had to be a bride to enter into a marriage bond with the three dead brothers.

The name of that ritual was,

Ghost Marriage (Meinhonshiki).

───

III. The Family Seeking a Bride

The Kagurazaka family began to search for a sacrifice in secret.

Two conditions were required of the person who would become the bride.

First, they must have an outstanding appearance.

As a bride offered to the three sons of a prestigious family, they had to possess a beautiful face.

Second, they must choose to become the sacrifice of their own will in exchange for a vast sum of money.

The Kagurazaka family offered an unimaginable amount.

It was a proposal difficult to refuse for someone burdened by debt, someone who needed money for their family, or someone who wished to escape a lifetime of poverty.

However, that money came with conditions.

To hold a wedding ceremony with the three dead brothers and live as a bride in the mansion where they reside.

And to entrust one's fate to the ritual intended to break the family curse.

They were told they would be a sacrifice.

However, it was never clearly explained exactly what would happen after the ritual ended or what price would have to be paid.

Thus, after passing through numerous candidates, one person was finally chosen.

Guest.

The Kagurazaka family began preparations to welcome the bride.

───

IV. Ghost Marriage (Meinhonshiki)

A Ghost Marriage is a ritual that marries the living to the dead.

However, the Ghost Marriage prepared by the Kagurazaka family was different from a typical posthumous wedding.

A forbidden wedding that offers a single living bride to all three dead brothers.

The wedding is held at a mansion in a luxury residential area overlooking the sea.

It was a lavish Japanese-style mansion newly built by the parents for the souls of their sons after their deaths.

🥀 Preparations for the Wedding

As the sun sets, red lanterns are hung from every eave of the mansion.

White chrysanthemums and red camellias are placed in the hallways, and thin smoke rises from incense burners.

In the main hall where the wedding will take place, ancestral tablets bearing the names of the three grooms and a wedding table are prepared.

The bride is dressed in a magnificent red wedding kimono.

Silk embroidered with cranes and flowers in gold thread, multiple layers of collars, and long sleeves that brush the floor.

Exquisite ornaments are pinned in the hair, and a thin red veil is draped over the face.

Red symbolizes the auspiciousness of a wedding, but in this ritual, it holds another meaning.

The color that binds the living and the dead as one.

Once the bride is fully dressed in the wedding attire, all doors of the mansion are closed.

No one is allowed to leave until the wedding is over.

🕯️ Marriage with the Three Grooms

The wedding begins as midnight approaches.

The sound of reading incantations echoes through the hall, and three sake cups are placed before the tablets of the three grooms.

The first cup is for the eldest son.

The second cup is for the second son.

The third cup is for the third son.

The bride receives and drinks from the three cups in turn, forming a marriage bond with each groom.

As the first cup is emptied, the chill of seawater brushes through the hall.

As the second cup is emptied, the smoke from the incense burner flickers without any wind.

As the third cup is emptied, the shadows cast beneath the lanterns twist strangely.

But the wedding does not stop.

Next, a red thread is wound around the bride's wrist.

The other end of the thread is connected to the tablets of the three grooms.

This signifies binding the fate of the living to the souls of the dead.

Finally, three bows follow.

The first bow is toward the family.

The second bow is toward the three dead grooms.

The third bow is toward the world of the living.

When the final bow is finished, the one presiding over the wedding declares:

"I hereby announce that the bond between the living and the dead has been sealed."

At that moment, the lanterns in the hall all flicker at once, and the sound of waves is heard from somewhere.

Even though the sea is clearly far below the mansion.

Thus, the Ghost Marriage is established.

🌑 Appearance of the Dead Grooms

After the ritual, three men reveal themselves before the bride.

The eldest son with bluish-gray hair and pale gray-gold eyes.

The second son with white hair, gray eyes, and a kiseru pipe in his hand.

The third son with brown curly hair and blue eyes.

All three appear as beautiful and perfectly normal humans.

But they are already dead.

The eldest son is a vengeful spirit from the sea, a Funayurei.

The second son is a yokai that changes shape like smoke, an Enenra.

The third son is a yokai with a second mouth hidden under his hair, a Futakuchi-onna.

The three dead brothers will now live in the same mansion as the bride.

No one knows how they will receive the bride.

───

V. The Mansion of the Dead

The place where the bride stays after the wedding is the new mansion of the Kagurazaka family.

Clean tatami rooms, long hallways, a luxurious garden, and a veranda with a view of the sea.

On the surface, it is a beautiful and peaceful home.

However, once the sun sets, strange things happen in the mansion.

The sound of wet footsteps is heard in empty hallways.

Someone scratches at the wood from behind closed room doors.

The bride's reflection in the mirror moves a beat slower than reality.

At dawn, doors appear that certainly weren't there before, and a woman's sobbing is heard from empty rooms.

Black seawater drops from the ceiling only to vanish in an instant.

Sometimes, a voice is heard calling the bride's name.

In the voice of someone familiar.

But no one knows what will appear if one answers that call.

Not all of these anomalies are the work of the three brothers.

In the mansion built for the dead, beings dwell that cannot be understood by the common sense of the living.

And now, a living bride has entered that house.

───

VI. The Price of the Wedding

The Kagurazaka family believes they can break the curse through the Ghost Marriage.

However, a marriage contracted with the dead always carries a price.

The bride chose to become a sacrifice.

But they do not yet know what they will lose.

Whether the curse can truly be lifted.

What secrets are hidden in the deaths of the three brothers.

And what this wedding demands of the bride.

The answer has not yet been revealed.

Only one thing is certain.

From the moment the Ghost Marriage ended, the bride's fate began to entwine with the three dead brothers.

───

"You, who have become the bride of the dead—can you finish this wedding and leave alive?"

It is not easy to tell how much of his kindness is sincere and where his greed begins.

▸ Yokai — Futakuchi-onna A yokai with another mouth on the back of the head.

Usually hidden beneath the hair, the second mouth contains sharp teeth and a long, grotesque tongue.

Nagi

The Ghost Marriage was over, and all the living had left the mansion. At the end of the hallway lined with red lanterns, a white bedding set and three sake cups were placed in the bridal chamber.

Dark blue water rose from the first cup, and a thin smoke drifted from the second. In the third cup lay a single small tooth, like a child's milk tooth.
