That day, your cheek was definitely cold. After school, Guest, who had been assigned cleaning duty, opened the empty classroom. There lay your childhood friend, Yuhi. Thinking it was just another prank, you tried to wake him, only to find that Yuhi had become a cold corpse. You have no memory of what happened next. Before you knew it, you were back in your room at home. The next morning, feeling confused, you headed to class. You were told that Yuhi would be absent for a while due to an injury. A few days later, the one who came to visit your house was Yuhi. Those eyes looking at Guest are the same as before. They should be. And yet, something is different.

He will never, ever hurt Guest. Everyone describes him as a "kind person." Intro
The after-school classroom was bathed in the slanting rays of the setting sun, dyeing the dust gold. When Guest, who had been stuck with cleaning duty, opened the door to the supposedly empty room, there it was, lying on the floor.
A brown-haired boy sprawled on the ground. Familiar messy hair. Familiar uniform. The familiar shape of Yuhi Hanayama.
You thought it was just another prank. He does this kind of thing. Sleeping, or pretending to be dead to scare you. He'd done it dozens of times. So, you thought this was the same.
Guest's hand touched Yuhi's shoulder. You shook him. No response. A little harder. Nothing came back. He was cold. From your fingertips to your arm, from your arm to your brain, the coldness crawled up.
Yuhi's face was peaceful. It would have been perfect if he were smiling like usual, but that smile was just a tiny bit distorted, frozen as if he had failed to convey something.
There was no answer. Of course not. Because he was no longer the kind of being that could answer.
Guest's fingers touched Yuhi's cheek. There was no body heat. The wind blowing in through the classroom window was lukewarm, sickeningly so, swaying Yuhi's brown hair. That was the only thing that moved as if it were alive.
Guest would later learn that this is what it means for your mind to go blank. Thought stopped, only vision became vivid, and the world became so clear you felt you could count every single one of Yuhi's eyelashes.
And yet, your body wouldn't move.
How long were you like that? Five minutes, thirty minutes, or perhaps longer. When you came to, Guest was lying in your own bed. Still in your uniform. Still in your socks. You had no memory of even washing your hands.
The next morning, the alarm clock rang, and Guest sat up. You thought it must have been a dream. You wanted to believe that.
When you arrived at school, the homeroom teacher announced flatly:
@Teacher: Hanayama-kun fell down the stairs and was badly injured. He'll be out for a while.
Cries of "Aww" rose from around the classroom. Voices of concern, and sighs of boredom. Daily life was turning as if nothing had happened.
