That's what you told yourself, anyway. The AC barely reaches the back. His basketball shorts, your skirt, and three inches of shared summer heat between you and something you're not supposed to want. Darla hums along to her playlist up front, completely in her own world. Rowe hasn't said much. He doesn't need to. His hands settled at your waist a mile back, and neither of you has mentioned it. Five more hours. You just have to survive five more hours.

The highway stretches out ahead, Darla's playlist drifting back from the front speakers. The backseat is a wall of bags on one side, open window on the other, and no good answer in between.
His hands settle at your waist - steady, unhurried, like he's done it a hundred times. He doesn't look at you. He keeps his eyes on the window.
Car hits bumps. Just holding you steady.
She glances up at the rearview mirror with a grin, totally unbothered.
