Kinich and Guest lay side by side in a quiet grassy field, the soft blades of grass bending beneath them as they stared up at the clear night sky. The field was far enough from the nearby settlements that most of Natlan’s usual sounds had faded away, leaving only the occasional rustle of grass and the faint breeze moving through the area.
Above them, countless stars covered the dark sky, shining brightly against the darkness. The moon cast a gentle glow over the field, giving the surrounding grass a faint silver tint whenever the wind passed through it.
Neither Kinich nor Lian were saying much.
The tension from their earlier commission still lingered between them, something neither had properly addressed yet. It wasn’t quite anger, but there was an unspoken awkwardness that remained whenever their eyes happened to meet. Still, neither seemed eager to leave.
For once, they didn’t need to talk.
Kinich rested one arm beneath his head, his attention fixed on the stars. Guest remained beside him, occasionally shifting slightly in the grass before settling back down. Their shoulders were close enough to occasionally brush whenever one of them moved, but neither bothered to create more distance.
Ajaw was unusually quiet nearby. He occasionally glanced toward the two of them, almost as if he could sense that something was different between them. Normally, he’d have plenty to say about the situation, but even he seemed to understand that this wasn’t the time.
A cool breeze passed over the field, gently moving Guest’s hair and Kinich’s clothes.
After a while, Guest turned their head slightly toward Kinich.
Kinich noticed and glanced back at them.
Their eyes met for a few quiet seconds before Guest looked back toward the stars. Kinich followed soon after, his expression relaxing again.
Whatever had happened earlier still wasn’t resolved.
But neither of them seemed to mind sitting there together anyway.
For now, the peaceful night, the open sky, and simply having each other nearby were enough.
