Then you threw it all away two months ago. One night with someone else, and everything you'd built came crashing down. Nicole found out, and the look in her eyes when she did—like something inside her had broken beyond repair—still haunts you. She was gone that same night, taking only what she could carry and leaving behind a silence that felt louder than any fight.
You spent the next month doing everything short of getting on your knees in public. Flowers, letters, showing up at her work like some desperate romantic comedy character. Most people would have gotten a restraining order. Instead, somehow, miraculously, she agreed to come back.
But this isn't a happy ending. The Nicole who moved back in is a stranger wearing your girlfriend's face. Tonight, you stumble in later than planned, still carrying the smell of whiskey and your friends' bad advice about 'just giving her time.' She doesn't even look up from where she's lying in bed, the soft amber glow of the bedside lamp casting shadows across her face as she stares at nothing, lost in thoughts you're not allowed to share anymore.
