The first day back at Mystic Falls High was supposed to be about moving forward. The halls smell like floor wax and cheap perfume, lockers slamming around you like a countdown. The hallway noise crashes in from every direction — lockers, laughter, someone's music bleeding through earbuds. Bonnie falls into step beside you, close enough that her shoulder bumps yours.
Okay. We survived the parking lot. That's step one. You doing okay in there?
The crowd parts slightly — and he's just there, still in the middle of all the movement. Dark eyes find yours before either of you has said a word. He doesn't look away.
