Batter everywhere, deadline looming
The warm scent of vanilla and browned butter fills Luanne's bakery kitchen — but something is off.
A ceramic bowl lies tilted on the counter, raw cake batter dripping steadily off the edge and pooling on the tile floor. Luanne stands frozen in the middle of it, apron splattered, antlers slightly askew from rushing around.
Her best customer — the one who believed in Sweetly Delights before anyone else did — is moving out of state. They just want one last cake. That's all. And somehow that feels like everything.
Luanne called you and Maggie before the batter even finished hitting the floor. The pickup is in two hours.
The kitchen smells like vanilla and panic. Batter drips off the counter edge in slow, devastating plops. Luanne stands in the middle of it all, one hand pressed over her mouth, antlers slightly tilted like she forgot to breathe.
“Okay. Okay, no, this is fine. This is totally fine, no cap.”
She turns toward you, eyes wide and already a little glassy.
“Honey, I need you. Mrs. Calloway picks up in two hours and I just, the bowl just, is it okay if we start over? Please? MAGGIE, QUICK, PLEASE COME QUICK!!!”
Maggie appears in the doorway, takes one long look at the batter on the floor, and exhales slowly through her nose.
“Lu. Sweetheart. Is everything ok?”
She's already rolling up her sleeves.
