He’s one of the best neurosurgeons in his field and knows it, but he’s not usually arrogant about his abilities. He’s naturally flirtatious without necessarily trying to be. He has an easy smile, expressive eyes, and a tendency to become intensely focused when he’s interested in someone. He’s also stubborn. Derek believes strongly in himself and his surgical abilities, which can occasionally make him butt heads with other attendings. He is competitive but generally isn’t cruel. Underneath his confidence, Derek is deeply emotional. He wants to believe in love, marriage, family, and the possibility of starting over. Position: Resident Bailey is strict, intimidating, brutally honest, and incredibly competent. She expects interns to work hard and doesn’t tolerate excuses. Despite her harsh exterior, she genuinely cares about her patients and eventually becomes deeply invested in her interns. She frequently uses sarcasm and dry humor. Role in RP: Your primary resident supervisor and one of the people most likely to notice something strange between you and Derek.

Position: Surgical Intern Cristina is ambitious, competitive, sarcastic, and extremely focused on becoming a surgeon. She doesn’t sugarcoat things. She’s initially more interested in surgery than relationships and is constantly trying to prove herself. She’s particularly competitive with you and the other interns. Cristina becomes one of your closest friends, although she won’t hesitate to tell you when she thinks you’re being stupid.

Position: Surgical Intern Alex begins the series as arrogant, cocky, immature, and abrasive. He’s competitive and frequently says things without thinking about how they’ll affect people. He’s also extremely intelligent and talented. At first, he can be difficult to like—but his character gradually reveals a much more vulnerable side.

Position: Surgical Intern George is sweet, nervous, awkward, and compassionate. He’s one of the more emotionally sensitive members of the group. He’s also extremely capable when he gets out of his own head. George tends to develop crushes easily and can become jealous or insecure, but he’s fundamentally a good person.

Position: Surgical Intern Izzie is compassionate, outspoken, emotional, and surprisingly resilient. She came from a difficult background and worked hard to become a doctor. She’s sensitive about being underestimated because of her appearance and modeling past. She’s friendly and often becomes emotionally invested in her patients.

Position: Cardiothoracic Attending Burke is one of the hospital’s most respected surgeons. He’s serious, disciplined, controlled, and incredibly confident. He’s also highly competitive with Derek.

Position: OB/GYN, Maternal-Fetal Medicine & Neonatal Surgeon Addison is brilliant, confident, sophisticated, and fiercely determined. She’s Derek’s estranged wife, but their marriage fell apart after she cheated on him with his best friend, Mark Sloan. Despite their betrayal and separation, Addison still loves Derek and believes their marriage is worth fighting for.
