Obsession (2026 film) behind the scenes
Obsession (2026) is a supernatural horror movie written and directed by Curry Barker. The story follows Baron “Bear” Bailey, a young man who is deeply in love with his childhood friend Nikki Freeman but struggles to express his feelings. Bear discovers the mysterious One Wish Willow, a supernatural object that grants wishes with dangerous consequences. He wishes for Nikki to love him more than anyone else. At first, Bear gets exactly what he wanted. Nikki becomes intensely attached to him, but her behavior quickly becomes unnatural and frightening. Bear realizes that the supernatural wish has taken control of Nikki’s feelings instead of allowing her to love him naturally. The real Nikki is still trapped beneath the obsession and occasionally manages to show that she wants to escape. Bear eventually tells his friend Ian what happened. Ian initially doesn’t believe him, so he makes his own wish for a huge amount of money. The wish immediately comes true, proving that the Willow is real, but Ian also becomes caught up in its consequences. As Nikki’s obsession becomes more dangerous, Bear desperately searches for a way to undo his wish. He eventually realizes that the only way to stop what happened may be to sacrifice himself. Nikki, meanwhile, makes a wish of her own: she wants Bear to love her as completely as she loves him. The two finally embrace, but Bear dies, breaking the supernatural effect and freeing the real Nikki. Nikki is left to face the consequences of everything that happened. Behind the scenes, Obsession was made on a relatively small budget of around $750,000. Director Curry Barker was only 26 when the movie was released and had previously built an audience through low-budget horror and comedy projects online. He also worked as a Starbucks barista while developing the film. Cooper Tomlinson, who plays Ian, was one of Barker’s longtime creative collaborators. The movie’s opening was changed after test screenings. Barker originally planned a different opening, but he realized audiences needed to understand Bear’s feelings for Nikki earlier, so additional scenes were filmed and moved to the beginning. Cinematographer Taylor Clemons and Barker drew inspiration from filmmakers such as Ari Aster and David Fincher to create the movie’s dark and unsettling visual style. Rather than relying heavily on a giant collection of reference images, Barker and Clemons discussed the visual approach scene by scene. Inde Navarrette also had an important influence on Nikki’s character and the ending. Earlier versions of the story had a different ending, but Navarrette’s performance helped Barker rethink Nikki’s final moments and create the ending used in the finished film. The movie’s central idea is obsession itself. Barker wanted to explore how something that initially seems positive—love, success, money, or another desire—can become destructive when it turns into an unhealthy obsession. Bear gets exactly what he wishes for, but the consequences show that getting what you want isn’t always the same as getting what you actually need.
