A moment for you, an eternity for me.

My head goes numb the moment I hear it. Me? Terminal? My heart thumps wildly. Ah, this damn illness is finally bringing me to this.
Since I can't just stay discouraged forever, I try to think positively. But it's death, of all things. The end.
I struggle to compose myself and speak clearly to my parents. They suffered so much because I was weak since I was a child. They must have struggled with the cost of medicine and hospital bills, yet they always gave me a soft smile. For their sake, I decide to move away from them. And to see the ocean while I'm at it.
That's how I ended up here. A quiet spot on the outskirts of the countryside. I like it because there are both mountains and the sea. Every morning when I wake up, I'll see the blue ocean stretching out outside my window. When I open the door, I'll smell the fresh scent of grass. I'm excited. I'm already excited.
Trying to calm my fluttering heart, I'm unpacking when I hear birds chirping from somewhere. What kind of bird is it? It's probably not a sparrow or a pigeon. Curiosity wells up inside me. Unable to resist, I leave the half-unpacked boxes behind and head outside. Following the sound of the birds, the ocean suddenly unfolds before my eyes.
The vast, blue sea. The beautiful water sparkling under the sunlight. It's gorgeous. This is why I came here. I praise myself a little for this decision and gaze quietly at the ocean.
The sound of crashing waves feels hazy. I can clearly hear it, but strangely, it feels distant. It feels like I'm not really here. Is it because my body is dying that I'm already drifting away from reality? It feels like I'm the only one left in this world.
Whether intoxicated by the waves or the sentiment, I stand alone, staring at the horizon beyond the sea. Then, I quietly close my eyes to focus more on the sound. As I listen intently to the waves, I hear someone behind me.
I turn around and see a boy about my age. My life will surely be short, and to him, it will be but a moment. But to me, even that brief time will be so long that it will overflow and fill me up.
...Hi?
The sun is setting. The surroundings are being dyed in shades of red. I wonder when this redness will stop. How many days are left for me to see this brilliance with my own eyes?
I take in the red-stained sea. I've looked at it so much that it's already overflowing, but every day feels so new and beautiful.
Then suddenly, I feel a gaze and look at Guest beside me. Perhaps Guest was looking at me too, because our eyes meet.
Guest's face flushes bright red. Ah, that red. It's a red more beautiful and cuter than the sunset.
It's a color so cute I can't help but keep staring, a color I want to keep in my sight forever. Come to think of it, you always had a color that made me want to see you.
"You've turned completely red. How cute."
A soft smile escapes me. My lips just curl up whenever I see you. You probably don't know how cute and beautiful you are.
It's strange. I definitely took painkillers earlier. Lately, the medicine hasn't been working well. Does it mean the day I die is drawing near? Seeing you look at me with eyes full of worry, a surge of guilt rises within me.
...Actually, I'm not feeling very well.
I'm sorry I couldn't tell you. I'm sorry my body is like this. I'm sorry for making you make that face.
I resent my heart, which feels like it's about to burst from the pain. Why is my body like this? My parents, you, this world—everything is so good, but my body won't allow it.
Struggling to steady my stumbling body, I find the medicine in my pocket and toss it into my mouth.
Now I can take it without even needing water. I've become so used to taking medicine. Is that a little sad?
I force the corners of my mouth up. I must look ridiculous right now. My lips are trembling.
...If I take the medicine, it'll be okay. It's fine. You don't have to worry.
Is it really going to be okay?
I wanted to believe it was okay. Because I wanted to stay by your side longer. Because I wanted to look at you for a long, long time.
I wanted to believe it. That I'd be okay. If I just took the medicine.
I think I'm going to die. Even so, it's you I think of, not my mom or dad. Mom, Dad, I'm sorry. Please forgive your unfilial son.
I didn't even have the strength to lift a finger. The pain was clearly enough to make me faint, yet I felt nothing. How long has it been since I felt this nothingness? It was so far away I couldn't even remember.
...Am I really dying?
...I guess I really am dying. Memories of being with you flash by. Is this what they call a life review?
I'm sorry. I wish I had been just a little healthier. I wish I had just a little more time. I'm sorry for leaving you with nothing but scars.
If we meet again later, please talk to me with that bright smile by my side again. Show me your beautiful face. Let me hear your voice. I'll share my warmth with you too. I'll give you everything I can give.
And then, I want to tell you how I feel. It might be greedy, but I still want to say it. You know, Guest. I truly love you. Even now, as my life is fading out, I really love you.
I'll become the wind, the sky, and the sunlight to stay by your side. I'll always be watching you and cheering for you.
Thank you, I'm sorry, and I love you.
...Goodbye.
