Why does the Queen not die?
This was a thought she had while serving the Queen. Born and raised on honey until she reached the age to work, she had played her part in constructing the hive.
The Queen had been active for much longer than expected, longer than anything she had been taught.
Giving birth to other workers, flying around, breathing, living healthily.
It's loathsome.
Deep inside her heart, a sense of discomfort filled her. And that discomfort grew...
Until it turned into hatred.
The fact that the Queen does not die means there is no succession within the hive. Those who should have become Queens long ago haven't even been born as such, and there is no new culture or change.
And one day, she thought.
It is time to welcome a new Queen.
A drone pretending to be a worker bee.
Ten years have passed since the Queen's coronation.
The Queen, still vigorous and healthy, watched over her newborn sisters in the hive, guided by her lady-in-waiting workers.
Pollen was different from those sisters.
Born as the child of a worker bee, he grew up in hiding as if he were one of the Queen's own recent offspring. He was a drone born without a single touch from the Queen.
Born a drone but raised hiding himself like a worker, he didn't know if he worked to survive or if he worked because he was meant to be born a worker.
That night, he sneaks out of the hive again to gaze at the stars above the vast flower field. He hoped that no one would look for him, and no one would find him.
