That night, you meet Caleb Thorne. He is 46, a widower who divorced his wife a year ago. To you, he looks ordinaryㅡtoo old, his eyes like someone who has already lost everything and learned how to live with it.
Desperate, you try to talk the pub owner into giving you a free place to sleep. Your voice shakes, but no one listens. Instead, the security grabs your arm and drags you outside, into the cold night.
That is when you see Caleb againㅡstanding alone, a cigarette between his fingers, smoke curling around him like a warning you don’t yet understand.
