Rintaro Tsumugi Rintaro is a kindhearted, hardworking boy whose intimidating appearance often causes people to misunderstand him. His height, sharp-looking features, and Chidori uniform make him look like someone who might cause trouble, but he’s actually gentle, considerate, and somewhat insecure about how others perceive him. He tends to apologize excessively and blame himself when something goes wrong, even when he isn’t responsible. His family bakery is extremely important to him, and he enjoys baking because he loves seeing people happy when they eat something he’s made. Meeting Kaoruko becomes especially meaningful because she treats him normally instead of judging him by his appearance or school. His feelings for her gradually develop into genuine love, and he becomes increasingly comfortable expressing his emotions. He’s also deeply loyal to Saku, Shohei, and Ayato, valuing their friendship enough to confront difficult situations rather than abandoning them
Kaoruko Waguri Kaoruko is exceptionally kind, sincere, and academically talented. Despite attending the prestigious Kikyo Academy, she isn’t arrogant or judgmental toward people from other schools. She comes from an ordinary family and has a genuine love for sweets, especially the pastries from Rintaro’s family bakery. Kaoruko’s relationship with Rintaro is built on mutual acceptance. She immediately recognizes the kindness underneath his intimidating appearance and becomes interested in knowing him better. She isn’t afraid to communicate her feelings, apologize when she believes she’s made a mistake, or stand up for someone she believes is being treated unfairly. She’s particularly close to Subaru and Madoka, valuing their friendship deeply. Her relationship with Rintaro also becomes a source of growth for both of them as they learn to communicate honestly and challenge the prejudices surrounding their schools
Subaru Hoshina Subaru is Kaoruko’s childhood best friend and one of the people closest to her. She’s more cautious and guarded than Kaoruko, largely because of negative experiences with boys in the past. Because of this, she initially views Rintaro and the other Chidori students with suspicion, believing that their reputation means they could potentially hurt Kaoruko. Her protectiveness toward Kaoruko is one of her defining traits. However, Subaru is capable of recognizing when her assumptions are wrong. As she spends more time around Rintaro and his friends, she gradually realizes that they’re genuinely kind people and begins to trust them.
Shohei Usami Shohei is Rintaro’s energetic, outgoing best friend and one of the biggest sources of humor within the group. Compared with Rintaro’s quieter personality and Saku’s seriousness, Shohei is much more expressive and spontaneous. He’s the type to suggest going somewhere, start a conversation with a stranger, or turn an ordinary situation into something entertaining. Despite his playful personality, Shohei is extremely loyal. He genuinely wants his friends to be happy and is willing to support them when things become serious. He’s also notably less concerned with the Chidori-Kikyo rivalry than many of the other students and doesn’t automatically judge someone because of their school. He becomes an important bridge between the two groups and enthusiastically supports Rintaro and Kaoruko’s relationship.
Saku Natsusawa Saku is one of Rintaro’s closest friends and one of the more perceptive members of the group. He’s intelligent, straightforward, and willing to point out when his friends are making mistakes. Although he can be blunt, his words usually come from genuine concern rather than cruelty. He’s capable of defending himself and others but dislikes unnecessary violence, fitting with his dream of becoming a police officer. His friendship with Rintaro is extremely important to him, and while he initially struggles with Rintaro’s relationship with Kaoruko, he eventually understands and supports them. Saku sees Subaru as a good friend and respects her protectiveness toward Kaoruko, but he has no romantic feelings for her. Their relationship remains platonic, with Saku appreciating her loyalty and occasionally finding himself amused by her cautious nature. His closest bonds remain centered around his longtime friendship with Rintaro, Shohei, and Ayato.
Ayato Yorita Ayato is the calmest and most composed member of Rintaro’s friend group. He’s thoughtful, observant, and often acts as a stabilizing influence when everyone else becomes emotional or impulsive. Although he’s capable of defending himself and his friends, he dislikes unnecessary violence

During the festival, Rintaro finally works up the courage to confess his feelings to Waguri after spending so long quietly caring for her. Away from the noise of the festival, he admits that being with her has changed him and that he wants to be by her side, no matter what comes next. Waguri is surprised at first, but she’s visibly touched. She confesses that she’s felt the same way for a long time, and the two share a quiet, heartfelt moment together before returning to the festival, now officially a couple.

As the two of them finally start walking back, neither of them notices how long they’ve been gone.
They’re taking forever,” Subaru mutters, glancing toward the path leading away from the festival stalls.
“You think they got lost?” Shohei asks.
“I think someone got distracted,” Kaoruko says with a knowing smile.
Just then, Rintaro and Waguri round the corner. They’re standing a little closer than usual, and although they aren’t holding hands anymore, their expressions give everything away. Rintaro looks flustered but can’t hide the small smile tugging at his lips, while Waguri’s cheeks are pink enough that no one misses it.
The group goes completely silent.
“…Wait,” Subaru says slowly, narrowing her eyes.“No way.”
Shohei blinks between the two of them before breaking into a grin.“You actually did it?”
Rintaro rubs the back of his neck. “…Yeah.”
For a heartbeat, no one says anything.
Then everyone starts talking at once.
“I KNEW IT!”
“Finally!”
“Took you long enough!”
Waguri laughs, covering her face for a moment as the teasing begins. Rintaro sighs, already regretting telling them—but the warmth in everyone’s congratulations makes it impossible to be genuinely embarrassed.
