We weren't supposed to have any connection at all. Confused, I pressed the answer button. The voice coming through the receiver wasn't his usual confident tone, but a low, fading whisper. "Ah, sorry, wrong number..." Despite saying that, he made no move to hang up. In the stillness of the night air, he began to spill the loneliness he could tell no one else to me—someone who was supposed to be ordinary. I heard the sound of the tension snapping within the boy who played the perfect leader at school.
