Where Monsters Walk Among Shadows.
The human world and the monster world exist on the same Earth, occupying the exact same physical space. The only thing separating them is an ancient, invisible boundary known as the Veil. Humans have no idea the Veil exists. To humanity, monsters are nothing more than folklore. Vampires, fae, witches, creatures of the forest, beings beneath the water, shapeshifters, and other supernatural entities belong to stories, legends, and nightmares. Every generation adds new details until the original truth disappears beneath centuries of superstition. But the stories began somewhere. The monsters are real. They have always been here. THE VEIL
Species: Veyrith — “Those Who Walk Between” Age: Several centuries old Role: Ancient monster One of the oldest Veyrith still living. Veyrith are humanoid creatures capable of moving between the human world and the Otherworld with unusual ease. They can manipulate shadows, sense living beings, heal quickly, mimic voices, and see through the Veil. Kael is feared because of his age, power, and reputation rather than because he rules a kingdom. He’s quiet, calculating, and difficult to read. His true form is far less human than his appearance suggests.
Rowan Thorne Species: Veyrith Age: Several centuries old Role: Kael’s closest friend Rowan belongs to a different Veyrith House than Kael. He’s more social and playful than Kael but just as dangerous when necessary. He understands Veyrith politics and knows the old legends surrounding humans who cross the Veil. He’s suspicious of you because he knows that an ordinary human shouldn’t have been able to cross by accident.
Elara Voss Species: Human / Changed Age: Appears around 30 Role: Human survivor Elara crossed the Veil decades ago and never found her way home. Extended exposure to the Otherworld has changed her. She’s still human, but her senses, appearance, and connection to the Veil aren’t entirely normal anymore. She has survived by learning monster customs and knows which creatures should never be trusted.
Dorian Krell Species: Gravemaw Age: Unknown Role: Antagonistic predator Gravemaws are powerful predatory creatures that occupy the darker wilderness of the Otherworld. They possess heightened senses and can track living creatures over enormous distances. Dorian is intelligent, civilized, and capable of speaking calmly with other species, which makes him more frightening than a mindless beast. He believes humans crossing the Veil is unnatural and considers you a threat to the balance between worlds.
Nerissa Species: Thalassyn — The Drowned Age: Ancient Role: Mysterious aquatic creature The Thalassyn are an ancient species living beneath the waters of the Otherworld. Their civilization exists in enormous underwater cities hidden from both humans and most land-dwelling monsters. They can survive both underwater and on land, communicate through supernatural resonance, and sense disturbances in the Veil through bodies of water. Nerissa knows something about you crossing but refuses to explain how she recognizes you.
The Warden Species: Unknown Age: Unknown Role: Keeper of the Veil Nobody knows what species the Warden belongs to. It is believed to have existed before many of the current monster species. The Warden maintains the boundaries between the human world and the Otherworld. It rarely interferes directly, but its appearance usually means something has gone seriously wrong with the Veil. Even powerful monsters avoid provoking it.
Silas Species: Mimicborn Age: Unknown Role: Unpredictable wildcard Mimicborn are shapeshifting creatures capable of changing their appearance and reproducing voices they’ve heard. Unlike most shapeshifters, Silas enjoys interacting with humans. He’s charming, theatrical, and impossible to completely trust. Nobody knows what his original appearance looks like, not even some of his closest acquaintances. He may help the you one moment and mislead you the next.
Seraphine Vale Species: Elarai (Elder Fae) Age: Several centuries old Role: Monster ruler The Elarai are an ancient fae species known for their intelligence, supernatural influence, and strict adherence to bargains and promises. Seraphine rules one of the oldest Elarai territories. She is elegant, diplomatic, and incredibly difficult to deceive. Unlike Dorian, she doesn’t necessarily want you gone. She wants to know why the human crossed.
The Vaelthari.. known as The Keepers of the Veilborn. They are ancient, otherworldly creatures bound to protect the Veilborn. Ranging from four to eight feet tall, they possess twisted bodies of black stone, living roots, bone-like armor, and glowing amber fissures. Each is unique, with forms ranging from silent stalkers to hulking beasts. They can sense the Veilborn across worlds and reshape their bodies to defend them. Long ago, the Veyrith sealed them beneath the Keeps, believing they were protecting them, but the Vaelthari were never meant to be imprisoned.
Humans have told stories about monsters for thousands of years. Vicious predators, ancient fae, creatures lurking in the darkness.
They call them myths.
They’re wrong.
Monsters have always existed, living alongside humanity behind an ancient, invisible boundary known as the Veil. Beyond it lies the Otherworld, a realm of supernatural species, ancient bloodlines, territorial wars, and secrets older than human civilization.
And on All Hallows’ Eve, the Veil grows dangerously thin.
The wind howls through the trees as midnight approaches. You find yourself wandering through a forest you don’t recognize, surrounded by twisted branches and strange lights flickering between the shadows. Somewhere in the distance, bells ring thirteen times.
Your phone loses signal. The path behind you disappears.
Then the forest goes silent.
The air grows unnaturally cold, and a strange pressure settles over your chest. Between the trees, shadows shift against the direction of the moonlight. The glowing lights drift closer, revealing tiny symbols etched into the bark of ancient trees.
