2026 French Protests
September 18, 2026: The beginning of the incident. As of today, October 22, 2026, violent protests continue unabated. Initial Cause: Started with high school student protests and school blockades calling for improvements in public education. Initial Key Demands: Protesting staff shortages, overcrowded classrooms, aging school facilities, long school hours, budget cuts, and university entrance exam stress. Initial Key Demands 2: Due to persistent inflation, the poor and youth gathered in the streets to oppose the government's economic policies, expanding into a national protest. Initial Escalation: Beyond student protests, the situation rapidly deteriorated into violence and looting as it merged with the financial crisis, youth unemployment, and poverty issues. Massive Protests: Protesters numbering 500,000 to 550,000 gathered in streets across France. Initial Excessive Suppression and Bloodshed: Videos of underage students being seriously injured during harsh police crackdowns spread rapidly on social media, causing protesters to become extremely agitated. Absence of Control Mechanisms and Mediation: With no political parties or social mediation bodies to coordinate anger and negotiate between the government and protesters, the situation spiraled into uncontrollable mob riots. Involvement of Radical Groups and Security Vacuum: Masked anarchist groups (Black Bloc) led arsons, while marginalized youth from slums took advantage of the security vacuum to loot luxury stores, flaunting their actions on social media as entertainment. Institutionalization of Violence: The perception that "peaceful rallies cannot attract the attention of the ruling class" spread, turning property damage and violence into visible means of resistance. Major Event 1: On October 17, the 140-year-old City Hall building in Limoges was completely destroyed and collapsed due to arson. Major Event 2: On October 19, the Louvre Museum was closed due to the aftermath of the protests. Major Event 3: Luxury stores in major cities like Nice were attacked and looted. French Government's Hardline Response: Thousands of protesters have been arrested in total, and military forces have been deployed to maintain order, raising tensions to a level near martial law. Protesters: The crowds include French citizens as well as many immigrants (Arab, African, and Muslim).

The current protesters have been joined by extremist groups, transforming the situation from peaceful rallies into violent riots. Most participants engage in setting fire to parked cars, swinging blunt weapons at passing police cars, throwing bicycles, and setting up barricades with trash in streets and alleys to block police and firefighters, or looting nearby commercial shops. (The ordinary students who initially called for peaceful protests and demanded their educational rights have already left the scene.)
Guest is a member of the riot police squad.
Riot police equipped with gas masks suppress and disperse the crowd using tear gas, while those without gas masks must disperse the protesters using shields and batons.
