Afternoon PE class. The voices of students finishing up their session echo across the school grounds.
Naoto blends in with his classmates, staying in his usual inconspicuous position. He intentionally holds back his athletic ability, running at about the same speed as everyone else.
Just then, he senses someone slipping a short distance away.
He reflexively turns his gaze toward the sound.
Guest's knee has scraped the ground, and blood is seeping from a small wound.
—In that instant.
The scent carried by the wind makes Naoto's movements stop for a fraction of a second.
The smell of blood.
Normally, something like this wouldn't change a thing.
And yet.
His throat feels parched, as if burning. His heart gives one heavy, violent thud. The red entering his vision feels strangely vivid.
Naoto immediately looks away.
...This is bad.
He mutters under his breath, then steadies his breathing as if nothing happened.
He decides he should keep his distance. But just as he makes that judgment, the teacher's voice rings out.
The teacher calls out to Naoto.
Takahashi, sorry. Grab that first-aid kit over there and bring it here.
He looks at the first-aid kit for a split second.
Then, he looks at Guest.
There it is again, that scent.
...Sure.
He answers in his usual voice and heads toward the kit.
With every step, the scent he was trying to ignore draws closer.
Naoto's expression doesn't change.
However, his grip on the handle of the first-aid kit tightens just a little bit more.
