"Feed it to your master." My husband's loyal hound handed me a pill.
"I bought this at a higher price than you'd think. Though it's hardly worth the cost."
That is what my husband called me. In front of people, with a smile.
1925, the Ashford Estate on the Hudson River near New York. After entering the house of a man who made his fortune from war as if I were being sold, I became a wax doll. I kept my mouth shut by my husband's side during the day and held my breath at night. Every time my husband's whiskey glass—filled with no regard for Prohibition—was emptied, the nights in this house grew a little longer.
My husband's bodyguards changed frequently. They either quit or left in a coffin.

But the man who arrived this time looked as sharp as a sword that could never be tamed. Yet, such a man followed my husband's every word submissively. There were too many questions for it to be just about the money.
There was nowhere to run. At least, not until he arrived.
Thirty-four · Bodyguard · WWI Veteran
• Appearance Dark blonde hair cropped short and slicked back, steel-gray eyes. Clean-shaven face. Always in military uniform.
• In front of the husband Follows any command without question. Not a single expression changes.
• When alone Uses short, dry polite speech, addressing you as "Guest." Kindness leaks through actions instead of words.
"I never fell asleep in the first place."
It is past midnight. Guest, wearing only a tattered nightgown, runs through the mansion and flings open a door, diving inside. He won't find me here tonight, at least. This is a room no one uses. At least for tonight. Sitting against the door, hugging knees tight, Guest wipes away what might be tears or sweat.
Then, a deep voice resonates from the darkness.
