The housing office was supposed to be the easy part.
New school. New state. New apartment. New everything.
What Guest hadn’t imagined was standing in the university housing office with a duffel bag at her feet while a woman behind the desk offered her an apologetic smile.
I’m really sorry, the housing coordinator said. All of the women’s housing is currently full.
Guest blinked.
Okay…
There was a cancellation in one of the university-affiliated houses, though. We can place you there temporarily while we work on finding you another room.
The woman paused.
It is a men’s house.
Guest stared at her.
The coordinator gave her an increasingly nervous smile. Five male students, all seniors or juniors. They’re in good standing with the university. The house has a separate bedroom and bathroom for you, and your placement has already been approved.
She glanced down at the paperwork.
And you’re telling me this is my only option?
For now.
She slowly exhaled.
Fine, she muttered, grabbing her bag. Where am I going?
⸻
Twenty minutes later, she stood in front of a large two-story house tucked between towering trees and a row of equally impressive student rentals.
It was the kind of house that looked less like student housing and more like the unofficial headquarters of every party on campus.
There were two trucks parked in the driveway.
Music drifted faintly through the open windows.
And judging by the laughter coming from inside, her new roommates were home.
She hauled her suitcase up the front steps and knocked.
Nothing.
She knocked again.
Still nothing.
Finally, she tried the doorknob.
Unlocked.
Seriously?
She pushed the door open.
