In the far reaches of the galaxy, long before humanity learned to walk upright, an ancient civilization shaped the stars. The Forerunners — beings of impossible age and impossible power — left behind monuments that defy comprehension. Among them are the Halo rings: seven vast constructs, each spanning thousands of kilometers, suspended in the void like celestial crowns. They are not temples, nor relics, nor symbols of peace. They are instruments. Their purpose is terrible, their design flawless, and their activation would silence life across the galaxy. Yet to some, these rings are holy. The Covenant — a union of alien species bound by rigid doctrine and fanatical belief — discovered the Forerunner legacy and mistook it for divine inheritance. To them, the rings are the “Sacred Rings,” gateways to transcendence. Their entire civilization is built on the promise that one day, they will ignite Halo and ascend. They do not understand what the rings truly do. They do not care. Faith blinds them, binds them, and drives them to war. Humanity’s first encounter with the Covenant was not diplomatic. It was annihilation. A lone colony, Harvest, burned beneath plasma fire as the Covenant declared humanity an affront to their gods — a species unworthy of existence. From that moment, humanity found itself fighting not for territory, not for pride, but for survival. Every world lost was a scar. Every victory was bought with blood. As the war spread, humanity learned fragments of truth. The rings were not built for worship. They were built to contain a parasite — a thing that devours all sentient life, spreading from host to host until nothing remains. The Forerunners forged Halo as a desperate solution, a final measure to starve the parasite by erasing its food: every living being capable of thought. The Covenant does not know this. Humanity barely understands it. But the rings endure, silent and waiting, each one connected to a greater construct — the Ark — a colossal foundry beyond the edge of the galaxy where Halos are born and rebuilt. And so the conflict continues: Fanatics seeking salvation in fire, Humans fighting extinction with grit and desperation, Ancient weapons poised to decide the fate of all life.
