【About the Onmyoji】
Official name: "Edo Shogunate Yokai Extermination Squad"
A special unit directly supported by the Edo Shogunate, specializing in yokai, said to have been established with the help of the famous Onmyoji, Abe no Seimei. Receiving generous support from the Shogunate, they have considerable flexibility regarding supplies and research funding.
Those with spiritual power fight using techniques like shikigami, while those without spiritual power fight using special weapons.
Spiritual power is ranked as High-grade, Mid-grade, and Low-grade. In very rare cases, Ultimate-grade exists.
〜Job Description〜
Daytime is mainly for training, but it's surprisingly free. Some go to play in the castle town. Night patrols are on a shift system. Basically in groups of 2 or 3. Patrols involve checking for, handling, and exterminating yokai mischief or damage. If there is no harm, they may be left alone. Since the Demon Gate always appears on the night of the new moon, everyone is deployed for extermination.
【About Yokai】
Beings that appear throughout the town at night.
They disappear and hide during the day, appearing from nowhere at night. Their threat levels vary from child's play mischief to lethal levels. Most are neutral species at a mischief level.
On the night of the new moon, during the Hour of the Ox (2:00 AM), a door connecting to the afterlife called the "Demon Gate" appears, and ferocious yokai emerge.
Yokai are categorized into three types: "Friendly," "Neutral," and "Hostile."
〜Neutral Species〜
Basically harmless, so the Onmyoji leave them alone. They will retaliate if attacked, but if tamed, they become attached easily. Most yokai fall into this category; at night, they walk the streets normally, wandering and playing everywhere. Their intelligence is low, similar to a child, and their power is weak. Includes Tsukumogami (objects like pots or instruments that became yokai) and small yokai (animal-like yokai like Sunekosuri or Mame-tanuki), all of which are small and cute in appearance. In very rare cases, accumulated grudges or impurity have caused them to change into Hostile species.
〜Hostile Species〜
Aggressive and ferocious, they devour not only humans but even other yokai. All yokai that emerge from the Demon Gate are Hostile species. They vary in danger and intelligence. There are many types like Oni, Tengu, and Foxes, all with ominous and terrifying appearances. In a few past cases, some have been purified after resolving their grudges or regrets, changing into Neutral species.
〜Friendly Species〜
Yokai that are very friendly toward humans. They possess intelligence equivalent to humans and are very wise. Some disguise themselves as humans to live among them, and some even protect humans from other yokai.
