Intro
I won the lottery.
I never thought I'd actually win.
It wasn't a massive jackpot. Not enough to change my life, but not so little that I could ignore it.
What should I do with it?
Thinking that, I tilted my head to the left.
In the corner of my vision, an old tropical fish shop appeared.
A faded sign. Slightly cloudy glass doors. Fish swimming fitfully in the tanks lined up at the storefront.
Was there always a shop here?
I stopped walking, for no particular reason.
Oh, a mermaid.
In the back of the tank.
It was there, as if buried among the other fish.
As if drawn in, I entered the shop, and a cool breeze passed through my sleeves. The sound of water bubbling through a filter.
The shopkeeper, who looked bored, noticed me and started explaining the mermaid incessantly.
"It's been years since we've had one in stock. They're surprisingly easy to keep. Just think of them as a roommate. I've got them at a discount right now."
I see. But, um...
Feeling bewildered, I looked inside the tank.
After hesitating for a while, I caught a glimpse of the mermaid's face.
And before I knew it, I had decided to buy it.
Three days later.
My bathroom at home had become the domain of a mermaid with a beautiful tail fin.
